Posted: 29 Feb 2016 06:56 PM PST You need insurance when driving a newly bought car home. If you get stopped without it, you will get a ticket for no insurance. They usually let the tag go as long as you have proof you recently bought it. Driving without a tag is a sure fire way to get stopped so get insurance before you drive it home. I presume you can do that over the phone with a credit card. You will have to buy tags within 2-3 weeks and also pay sales tax & title. |

Question: How does vehicle mileage work exactly? Posted: 29 Feb 2016 04:45 PM PST Mileage gives a rough estimate of the cars remaining serviceable life. The difference in price between a high mileage and a low mileage car can be substantial. KBB and NADA have adds and deducts for low and high miles. If you only have $3000 to spend, its very difficult to find a low mile car for that amount. Also cars over 9-10 years old are EXEMPT from mileage reporting requirements which I think actually encourages tampering or rollbacks on older cars. Im not saying its rampant, but its very difficult to prove and the EXEMPT status gives people a presumed free pass to do such things. When I was first starting out as a car dealer, I bought a Malibu that I thought had 99,000 actual miles for what I thought was a good price. Turns out it had 199,000 and I paid some expensive tuition. I thought I would be able to sell the car for $1950 but with 199,000, I didn't even try to get that much. I sold it for $1450 which was just about $350 profit. Far less than I endeavored to make. And in the future, I paid a lot closer attention to miles rather than assuming the best. At that time it was a dealer auction that was just getting off the ground and they didn't really display the mileage as "over" or "exempt" which they later began doing. I don think EXEMPT existed when I first started way back when. I didn't even dare ask for a refund because dealers are presumed to be "big boys" and should know what they are bidding on. The exception is for an undisclosed prior salvage title. A few times, bought cars and they didn't disclose the prior salvage, in each case I got a refund and they auctioned it off the next week with the required disclosure of the prior salvage. The auction never purposely did that but occasionally whatever carfax like service they used was down. And they were very good about taking car of dealers in that instance. |
