Question: I have an overnight to kill waiting on a train in Atlanta. Train station closed. Is bus to airport & nap plausible idea?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 04:18 PM PDT

I had to be brief, but I can put a longer explanation here. I have a train to Atlanta that arrives in the early evening. The train I need to catch is the next morning. However, the train station closes overnight. I was thinking about hopping a bus to the airport to chill, eat and take a nap as if I were an air traveler on a layover. Would that work? Or does one need a ticket for a flight in order to get to areas where napping is possible?

Question: Barendrecht parijs train without Thalys?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 06:33 AM PDT

For this kind of search I prefer the German rail planner, which you can set to 'no ICE' which also does not give Thalys.
http://www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml and click on further search options, (in the area where you enter your travel details.

I had to fiddle a bit.
First search Barendrecht to Paris on the first page you get.
Set date and time, (or use a random one for testing) and hit search.
When you get the results click on 'change other data' between the 'question' part and the results.

You get some results, but it will take quite long.
7 to 9 hours, depending on time of day and how often you need to change.
In short:
Barendrecht, Dordrecht, Antwerp, Lille Flanders, Amiens, Paris
That means that you have to change in all of the places mentioned between Barendrecht and Paris.

I would not know how to get price information, I have done it when I had a rail pass.
I would try the Belgium rail site to see if you can buy one ticket to Antwerp, and one from Antwerp to Paris, or whatever station you need to change in Belgium.

https://www.nsinternational.nl/?utm_sour... allows you to select 'no fast trains showing' but do not give the slow alternatives.

PS, I am not sure the slow option is cheaper if you can buy a week in advance,

Question: Ex-Southern Pacific?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 01:40 AM PDT

Because we had the sad misfortune to be bought first by Phillip Anschutz of the DRGW, who raped the Southern Pacific of the best assets, then sold the leftovers to the Union Pacific. The Union Pacific immediately did all it could to erase the name Southern Pacific. The SP was a major Class 1 railroad that should have been buying companies instead of being bought. Sadly though, it's management was more interested in securing golden parachute retirement plans for themselves and let the company slide into disrepair. It was a dark day when the Union Pacific bought us. The Southern Pacific deserved a better fate instead of ending up a fallen flag. I miss them as they were a much nicer company to work for.

Question: What is it like to have a car title loan?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 07:22 AM PDT

The loan company will loan you the money based on how much they think you can afford to pay back each month. You do not get to choose that, but if you cannot afford as much as they are willing to loan you, get less. Do not go to them for a loan until you know how much you can comfortably afford to pay back each month.

Check the paperwork or ask whether it is a fixed rate of interest for the life of the loan, or adjustable. Adjustable means the rate very likely could go up. Also find out whether there is a 'balloon payment' due at the end, which means they make your monthly payments lower, but at the end you have a huge amount of money due to them in the one final payment to pay off the loan. Be sure you understand ALL the details about how much you are borrowing, what the interest rate is, due dates for payments, how they want the payments submitted, what it will take to pay off the loan and get the title back, etc.

They just take the title of the car until you pay off the loan. Usually you get statements or some kind of coupon book for your payments. You have to be absolutely dedicated to paying them back and paying on time, or they will come take your car.

Question: For those in Chicago: what do I have to do during the driving test? Is parallel parking needed, do i need to drive on the highway, etc.?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 07:18 AM PDT

Most of the time it depends on who your tester is. My friend and I both took our drivers test the same day. My tester made me make a three-point turn, parallel park, AND back into a parking space. I get back to the DMV, and find out that my friend had to drive around the block (4 right turns!) and pull into a parking space...front-ways! We both passed, but I was annoyed that her test was much easier than mine was.

Basically, be prepared to do everything you mentioned in your question, just in case. There are many DMV employees that each do tests their own way, and you have NO way of knowing who you'll get.

Question: What if someone drives a car that's in your name?

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 06:59 AM PDT

If someone steals your car you will not get in trouble, however you have to report it at stolen, otherwise it looks like you gave permission. (who doesn't report their car stolen if it's taken without permission right??)

If you have canceled all insurance then you don't get any money for your stolen car in the event it is not recovered or in the event it is damaged by the person(s) that stole the vehicle.
That's why, if you value your property you should always keep at least fire and theft coverage on a car you don't plan to use on the road in the event someone steals it, or it is lost to a fire.

Question: What do pilots think of "Chemtrails"?

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 03:18 AM PDT

What do pilots think of the "chemtrails?"
Please note that the term "chemtrails" is not capitalized. It is generic not a proper name. Also note that the question mark is inside the quotation marks. In the USA, when quotation marks are used, the punctuation mark goes inside the quotation mark. The subject is chemtrails. I need to tell you I have not heard of this.

Question: Lap child during take-off and landing?

Posted: 23 Jul 2014 01:08 AM PDT

I am retired from the FAA as a field inspector and accident investigator, having a child in your seat with you during a landing accident is very serious. With the child in your lap, with forward facing seats all the intera from the aircraft will cause your body to bend at the hips forward crushing your child very quickly.

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity, like your head.

Your head weighs about 20lbs and there is no way during a sudden stop you are going to be able to sit straight up in your seat. Most people in a sudden stop sitting up because of the intera may lose their head as the body swings forward. For this reason, people are told to bend forward as far as they can to prevent the 20lbs of head from swinging forward. On your next flight take the passenger briefing card out and read the emergency procedures.

If it were me, I would put the child in a car seat strapped in and now take a chance of crushing a child.

However, say all that check with your airline and see if they allow small childern, most do up to a certain age.

Question: Why is my package stuck in Shanghai, China?

Why is my package stuck in Shanghai, China?

I ordered a custom built laptop from HP, it shipped from Chongqing, China to Shanghai, China where it has bee, quote "at local FedEx facility" for 4 days. The estimated arrival date for my laptop is this Friday, and thus very unlikely, even if it was to get boarded on a plane tonight (in china) it most likely won't be here by Friday, so why is it stuck in Shanghai, and when is a accurate estimte for its arrival.

Question: Does a 40 year old have a chance to fly with the airlines? I have 1700 hours, CPL MEI. I was a CFI. I quit after 911 but i want to fly?

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 07:24 PM PDT

Do not even think of major airlines -

But you could try the regional airlines, and the commercial operators (non-sked) like Polar Air, Southern Air, Kalitta Air - but to get to fly with these you will have to pay a type rating ($20,000) with a 747, and do the ATP at the same time -

With a regional airline, expect $20,000 as first officer as yearly salary - With the commercial operators expect $40,000 yearly salary to start as a first officer -

Question: Is the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 a safe plane?

Posted: 22 Jul 2014 03:23 PM PDT

If it is an older plane, then of course it isn't going to be as technologically advanced structure and mechanically wise, but if it was to pose a real danger, it would not be in the air. If they saw bolts falling off or it was rusting, then it would be deemed unsafe and will not be in service.

I prefer the modern boeing and airbuses but I wouldn't be put off of flying in an older aircraft

Question: How does freight and passenger gearing work?

Posted: 21 Jul 2014 03:31 PM PDT

It is purely a matter of the ratio of the reduction gearing between the traction motor. A locomotive geared for freight trains has a high starting tractive effort, but low top speed, and a passenger-geared locomotive vice-versa. All other factors being equal, both will be capable of the same power output. A freight locomotive would thus be perfectly capable of hauling a passenger train, but it would have a greater acceleration rate, but lower top speed. Conversely, using a passenger locomotive to haul a freight train would actually be more problematical as it would have a much slower rate of acceleration, with the consequent danger of overheating the traction motors unless the load is reduced.

I mainly drove electric multiple-unit passenger trains here in the UK. They were separated into 'Suburban' and 'Main Line' types, and although both had identical motors giving 1000hp per four-car 'unit', the gearing of the 'suburban' units gave high acceleration for the frequent stops, but were limited to 75mph top speed, whereas the 'main line' units were more suited to long distance services with few stops. The acceleration rate was lower, but their top speed was 90-100mph. For these reasons, the two types were not allowed to operate 'in multiple' with one another.

Question: Can diesel elec trains really go over 400 miles on 1 gal fuel?

Posted: 21 Jul 2014 08:25 AM PDT

The bigger the train the more fuel efficient. If the train is large enough it leaves with an empty tank and arrives full.

Maybe recheck your information and look at the details of the ad for moving CARGO on a train vs moving cargo on a truck.

Extra 2000 lbs One more gallon.
The first 1,000,000 like say the locomotive and the empty train cars takes a little more. to get started.

Train cars can easily carry 100 tons.

The AAR acknowledges the 'averages problem' in its report: "480 [ton-miles per gallon] was the average last year for all rail traffic across all Class I railroads – that means for some trains and some rail traffic, the corresponding figure will be much higher, while for others it will be lower."

The questionable validity of the specific statistic of 436 miles on 1 gallon of fuel does not detract from CSX's overarching point: that trains are more efficient ways of transporting freight than traditional truck-and-trailers. But, whether CSX and other freight companies truly transport 1 ton of cargo over 400 miles on a single gallon of fuel is a relatively hard fact to verify.

Question: Why do I love trains?

Ever since I have been maybe 8-9 years old I have loved trains. I have model trains. I can spend hours at the train tracks just watching them pass. I subscribe to trains magazine etc.

I know its not their power or size. I do love the graffiti on the side of them, but other than that I cant say any definitive reason why I like them. Any suggestions why they might be appealing to me and so many people?

P.S since I answered your question could you give some of your salary to me :)

Question: Is this car worth it?

Posted: 18 Jul 2014 06:52 PM PDT

First thing you should check is the KBB (Kelly Blue Book) value of the car. I went ahead an priced it for you and I came out with a price of $4,235 in Good condition. He's selling it a little below that, so there may be some sort of issue with the car. He may say it runs fine, but once you drive off and he has your money, it could break down, and then you're s.o.l.

I'd order a Carfax on it. It costs 40 bucks, but that's better than potentially throwing $4000 down the drain. Also, with a high mileage car, you will want to ask the owner for any available service records. The Carfax will tell you how many owners there have been and how many miles each drove. It'll also show a few service records if the car was taken to a dealership for service.

If I were you, I'd take the car to a mechanic of your choice, and have them drive the car and look it over. This way they can give you an estimate on any repairs, and highlight any damage or things you may not find desirable. Other than that, drive the car and see how you like it. Good luck!

Question: I want to sell my car, but it needs body work?

Posted: 18 Jul 2014 06:46 PM PDT

My car needs work. It's an 07 with a bit less than average milage and a desirable make and model in this state and area. Bluebook value is $9,000 to private buyer, $7,700 trade-in for fair condition. The quote I got was $1,500 to make it shiny and new again (body work). The work is cosmetic and on the back and side, not horrid looking either.

Should I sell it as it is, or fix it and then sell it? I'd prefer to just sell it, but will I be docked a ton because of the damage? I'm wondering if I should sell it to a dealership or a private buyer. Private buyer= a lot of work and confusion for a young woman, and I don't want to be taken advantage of or deal with anything creepy.

Question: Help on buying a used mustang?

Posted: 18 Jul 2014 06:35 PM PDT

Never listen to whatever stories a seller has to say about a car. Your interest are not aligned. If it were just a battery, well that's the simplest and cheapest thing to obtain and he would be selling a low mileage, running car. Instead, he has a story while he tries to unload this piece of junk on to some gullible sucker.

As the car has been sitting a while, any number of things could be wrong with it. First and foremost, maybe the car started sitting when something broke all that time ago and the fact that it's not running has nothing to do with time but with the fact that this con man didn't have the funds to fix it then so the car sat. Could be that the fuel is now bad. When you know a car is going to sit for an extended period of time, one should remove the spark plugs and drain the fuel.

Anyway, you need to run away from this car. There is nothing special about an 01 V6 Mustang. Nothing. Go find one that doesn't have a pack of lies attached to it.

Question: How to get a car after repossessions and late payments asap!?

Posted: 17 Jul 2014 08:54 PM PDT

My fiance and I shared one car that was paid off. Shortly after it broke down and was a major repair. After just having a child, a newer car seemed the best option at this point.

Now, at the time we went to 4 places. Just using my name, because her credit was bad and mine was slightly better, we were approved at the first place and denied at the rest. Going back to the first place days later we were no longer approved from the other places running my credit. With just a rental car at the time, we were desperate and needed a Co signer. My grand father agreed as long as we refinance in a year. dealer up sells me an expensive car and boom 22,000 loan.

The first year it wasn't a problem with 2 incomes, then my fiancé and I split and I was left with it. I became late, it was repoed once and I borrowed money to get it back. New job and cheaper house made my payments better but constantly struggling and playing with fire. 2 years later my grandpa still can't get out of the loan and it gets repoed again. He pays to get it out to try to sell it and pay off the loan. But now, it's 8000 upside down with fees on the loan. So I'm back to driving it. Feeling worthless, I tried doing everything to trade in the car to get my own and couldnt. 4 months later it was just repoed again. And I don't want it back. Gpa is pissed but knows it's best. But now I NEED a car. Let's say my credit is 490 as a worst situation number, how can I get a car?! BHPH? I won't ask anyone to cosign. HELP!!

Question: Which SUVs can I look into?

Posted: 17 Jul 2014 08:49 PM PDT

Hi everyone,

I'm a student studying in Colorado so I live in a place where it snows for half a year every year. I have quite a tight budget of $10,000 (might be able to go up to max $12,000). I'm having used SUVs in mind because they have better views on the road, and also higher ground clearance. These are 2 of my biggest concerns. The following is a guideline on what I'm looking for:

1) Transmission: all except RWD
2) Size: not a huge one like Chevy Tahoe or Dodge Durango
3) MPG: The higher the better, but decent works too (minimum 16/17?).
4) Reliability: able to go up mountain roads, don't have a lot of problems.
5) Space: can fit in furniture or bikes
6) Interior: No preference over leather/cloth, as long as it's comfy and doesn't feel too cheap overall.

Also, please advice me on this: will FWD have the same handling as AWD/4WD in snowy, mountain, or icy roads? I'm not planning on changing winter tires.

I know it's a lot to look at with this budget, but any comments/suggestions on what kind of car models, body type, brands to look into will be greatly appreciated! - Felix.

Question: 2008 dodge charger???

Craigslist is where curbstoners hang out, these cars are sold by fake car dealers. The titles aren't in their names, most refuse to give you vins and the cars are salvage.

Ask them 1st if their name is on the title and 2nd get the vin and google it before you even leave your house.

You better know what you are doing when you fool with sellers on craigslist. Make sure they are the ACTUAL owners of the car 1st.

You need debt help, please visit Dave Ramsey and get some REAL financial advise. I worked @ dealers, they sell cars, not help you get out debt.

If you go back, they will find another way to sell you another car and you will be worse off.

You best best is to sell the vehicle on Autotrader.com / Craigslist (for the best price) and cough up the difference and walk away without going into default and getting sued / garnished.

Hello,
I want to replace my vehicle factory 16" Tire and Rim with 18" or 19". I never being into this thing thats why I am totally illiterate in this matter. I want to ask:

1. I saw many cars with huge tire and rims literally touching car's fender. It looks like they lower their vehicle in order to give it a sporty look. How can we do that?

2. Does low profile tire effects the smoothness of driving?

3. What points should we consider when replacing tire and rims?

4. What brand of tire and wheel is recommended? I can spend $1300 on both

Thank you and much appreciation of your time.

In older cars, the front doors used springs at the hinges.

Newer cars tend to use a rubber piece. These wear out fairly fast. Because the driver's side is used more than the passenger side, the it will fail sooner.

car rpm jumps and falls drastically?

My friend has an 03 Nissan Altima 4 cyl. After the car gets warm the engine revs and falls so fast it jerks the car around. We gave it some gas in neutral and in park with the same result. I think it might be a misfire. The check engine light is on and will be checked in a day or so, but trying to get ideas now. It idles fine, just when you give it gas, it goes spastic.
Also, on a weird note, his ac starts out cold but slowly gets warmer as his car warms up. Soon as it blows hot air his car starts jumping. Pretty sure they're not related, but might as well ask anyway.

Stopped at a stop lite the engine will miss one time or shut down completely. I put it N, turn the key and it starts right up. Other day, driving between 25 and 30 mph it shut down 3 time in a half hour period. Started right up each time. Last couple of days it runs ok. 5.9 L engine. 1990 chevy 4X4 166,000 miles. Question: Do my brakes need bleeding?

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 04:20 PM PDT

About two months ago, I bought a 6 year old toyota yaris. I checked the front pads and rotors and they seem to be fine. The pads have plenty of life to them at least 70%. They seem to be the cheaper metallic pads.

The rear drum brakes also seem to be fine. The car has about 124k on it, about 75k miles. When I press on the brake pedal, I have to press it half way for it to stop decently, and if I need to stop quickly, I almost have to push it all the way to the floor, and it wont lock up unless I'm travelling at least 15-20km/h

Could it just need bleeding? I tried to bleed the front right caliper but the bolt was stuck on, and I will need to work on it later. The fluid level is at the max

Question: Why won't my car accelerate when i push hard on gas pedal?

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 04:13 PM PDT

fuel problems? it sounds like it may be running too rich and choking itself out? I'd take it in for an emissions test to make sure (don't get an official smog test if you're in california, just an unmarked emissions test). That's what I'm thinking, either the injectors or clogged, a sensor may be off (like your O2 sensor) or something is going fishy with your fuel injection system, it mean it DOES have 227,000 miles on it.

My old Datsun 280zx from 1983 has only 150,000 on it and I baby it a lot.

Question: Can seafoam fix my problem?

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 04:05 PM PDT

I recently purchased a 2004 kawasaki ninja ex250, and the motorcycle will not start unless the choke is engaged, and it dies instantly when given any throttle. I am thinking that it might be gunked up carbs, and have a bottle of seafoam.

I hear that you can just pour some seafoam into the gas tank and it will work... but will that work while the bike is in idle since I can't actually use any throttle or make it go?

$125 for diagnosis, plus somewhere between $25 and $4000 for the repairs.

Which is another way of saying that we can't tell a blessed thing about what's wrong with this car until you have the codes pulled.

Question: Lost title before registering motorcycle?

Posted: 16 Jul 2014 12:05 AM PDT

A month ago i got a loan for a motorcycle in a private transaction.

Found a gentlemen selling a bike on a classified, bought the bike, everything went great. He gave me the title and I gave him the cash.

I turned the title over to my bank to put a lien on it. Unfortunately, they sent it back stating they were unable to register it on my behalf and I needed to personally do it. I got the letter on a saturday and thought ok, i'll do this on Tuesday (my first day off) well unfortunately, my wife grabbed the title in the envelope and tossed it with a stack of other trash mail and I ended up losing the title.

I am now unable to contact the owner because he used a random google phone number to prevent spam/his phone number from being picked up by marketers. Is there anything I can do at this point? I have paid for the bike, have a signed bill of sale and a bank transaction, but im unable to contact the registered owner for a new title and i'm unable to register it to myself without the title.

Question: Motorcycle electronics died on me while driving?

What temperature was the battery when it stopped, if it was extraordinarily hot, then that is a fairly good indication that the regulator/rectifier has failed (not that strange on a Honda of that age).

If the battery was correctly charged (as well as filled) before installation and is now discharged then the cause was probably the charging system (the alternator being the likely culprit).

But a bike that is running well and gradually becomes rougher as it warms up could be a sign that the coils are failing.

There are ways of testing the quality of all of the electronic components – a multimeter and continuity tester are useful tools here.

Question: Motorcycle crash percentages?

It makes no difference. In nearly every situation it is the rider who comes off worse – therefore it is the rider's responsibility to do everything possible to avoid it, because they will benefit from it.

If you show your mother the statistics showing that the cause of accidents is beyond her child's control and that their safety lies in the hands of complete strangers, she is unlikely to be comforted. Perhaps certificates of advanced riding courses would be more effective.

Question: Could i trade a 1978 Kawasaki z1000 ltd for a decently sporty, lightweight yamaha...?

It is about 560 pounds wet, you seem to dislike the weight and would something lighter.
How much lighter? How much speed do you need? How much money are you willing to pay? What style would you like? Where it the world you are?

Light would be a 55mph 173 pound Janus Halcyon 50, $5,300 FOB Goshen, Indiana
