Question: Why won't passenger planes let the pilots "eject" out when a crash is inevitable? Posted: 25 Jul 2016 07:49 AM PDT Most plane crashes are caused by human error. Mechanical failures, fires, bird strikes, etc are extremely rare due to a great number of regulations on airlines and a strong emphasis on safety. There is an old adage that "the captain goes down with the ship." The role of a captain (or pilot) is to lead the craft to safety regardless of the cost in an attempt to save lives. If the captain of the American Airlines flight that was doomed by bird strike a few years ago ejected, everyone would have died. Instead, he fought the airliner down and safely landed in the river, saving everyone's lives and was hailed a hero. |
