(Good city cars though) So I can understand you not wanting to go that small.<p>Go slightly bigger to the Corolla / Civic size. Bit more space, bit larger engine, much nicer to drive. New Corollas are more like 31 mpg combined cycle, 36 on the open road. And with careful driving, they can actually get that.
