Question: How do they cool down the cabins of commercial airliners between flights? Posted: 03 Oct 2016 01:12 AM PDT Large airliners have am APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) which is a small gas turbine generator, usually back in the tail end of the fuselage. This can supply power to the planes aircon, instruments and provide power to start the main engines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auxiliary_... If you look closely at the tail of a modern airliner you will see another small jet exhaust. This is left running while the plane is on the tarmac and being unloaded / loaded etc. It would only be shut down when the plane is fully powered down. The APU in an A380 is rated at 1,800 hp, so it has plenty of power to keep the planes systems running. You don't usually hear them running because you exit via the air bridge. But if you ever have to exit a large airliner by the rear stairs onto the tarmac at a smaller airport, you can hear APU running above you. |
