A 4.5 star rated Toyota is just as safe as a 4.5 star Merc as they have been though the same tests. If the Toyota scores 4 stars, and the Merc 5, then yes, that particualr Merc is somewhat safer.</p><p>Once thing though, larger car often rate higher because they have more "crumple zone" to absorb accident damage, and topend cars are more likely to have better safety features like stability control, more air bags etc. So a $100K Merc is probably safer than a $20K Corolla.
