Posted: 02 Oct 2016 05:04 PM PDT Ford did put airbag sensors on the core supports, but I thought in newer years like yours that there were no more external sensors and that everything is in the restraints control module. But, if it is up there where you say it is, then it could be an air bag sensor. If it is, then be careful unplugging it, or you could set off the airbags. I did a quick google search though, and it didn't find any air bag sensors for that car, only restraints control modules....but that doesn't mean it isn't one...the only other thing is it may be a sensor for outside air temp (ambient temperature sensor). Posted: 02 Oct 2016 04:15 PM PDT Get your charging system checked. It's possible the alternator belt is slipping or worn, or the alternator is faulty. Any auto electrician can check that in a couple of minutes, or you can use a multi-meter to check the battery charging voltage. With the engine running the voltage on the battery should be about 13.8v. If it's not, then the battery isn't being charged properly and you fault find from there. One of my old cars had a faulty regulator, and it only charged the battery at minimal current. It was enough to keep some power in the battery during the day, and restart the car. But if you drove for more than about an hour at night the battery ran down and the car wouldn't start, Because the system wasn't making enough power to run the lights, so it drained the battery. |
Question: Can I Use 91 Gas on my 87 Car? Posted: 02 Oct 2016 04:09 PM PDT It will do NO harm to run on a higher octane than the engine is designed for. But unless the engine is designed to take advantage of the higher octane there is no benefit. If you noticed a difference it may be related to things other than the Octane rating, like the alcohol content. Alcohol added to gas actually raises the Octane, but reduces the power available, and while the difference isn't huge, it's enough to notice. There are also modern engines that are able to adjust to different octanes by adjusting the engine timing as needed. Like the newer Toyota / Lexus V6s. They will run fine on 87, but can make 5 or 10 more HP on 91. In that case it's not "imagination" as there is a measurable difference. But the engine is designed that way, and Toyota recommend 91, but the manual says 87 is also OK Also, you have a turbo charged engine. Normally you would run them on a higher octane because of the increased combustion pressure. I wonder if it is actually detuning itself to handle the lower grade gas and it's more of an oversight by Honda (they haven't reprinted the user handbook for that model?) In that case, you may not just be imagining the difference, and like I said at the start, it won't harm the engine if you keep using it. |
