Posted: 05 Oct 2016 07:50 PM PDT Not at a dealership. If a car is cheap and not running you can assume it's got some serious problem, like it needs a new engine. And the dealer repair costs is going to be more than the car is worth. If you or your friends have the tools and skill to fix a car (swap engines out etc) then it could be an option. Otherwise, pay a bit more and buy a DECENT used car. Any modern Japanese designed car should be good for 200,000 miles or 20 years without major problems. So as long as you get it checked out mechanically, buying a well cared for 10 year old / 100k mile Toyota should be fine and last for years. Buying and abused one with a sick motor is going to get expensive. |
Question: Any other reliable 4x4 suvs I can get for under 15 k other than the xterra? Posted: 05 Oct 2016 07:40 PM PDT My ford ranger is dying...it only has 160,000 miles but everything is breaking and I cannot afford to keep putting money in the thing. I am only 20 years old and trying to go back to school. I still owe just under 4,000 on it but it is worth around 6. The transmission is being fixed and as soon as it is I plan to sell it to carmax and pay off the loan w/ a little bit extra. Anyways, I am looking for a new vehicle. I am doing my best to not put myself in any precarious financial situations...but it is looking like I really have no choice but to buy a more expensive, lower mileage vehicle so I don't end up in the same position I am in now. I know beggers can't be choosers but if I am going to spend over 10k I would like the vehicle to be something I actually enjoy driving. I can't afford another compact pickup or desirable SUV (Tacoma, frontier, 4 runner) because they are so expensive... so I am looking at other things. I need a true 4x4 suv that is reliable and under 15k that is fairly new and low miles my credit union will finance (Loan isn't an issue...i have a great credit score/ excellent credit history). I have found a few nissan xterras, but surely there are other options, right? |

Question: Is leasing a new car bad? Posted: 05 Oct 2016 04:52 PM PDT Leasing is good if you want a new car every 3 years or so, don't drive a lot, and want a nicer car than you can afford to buy. You have the first two, if you have the third one, then I say go for it. I just don't like not not owning anything at the end of 3 years. |
Question: Where and how to find a car mechanic? Posted: 05 Oct 2016 04:22 PM PDT You're right. You cannot expect the seller to waste their time and you can't expect a professional mechanic to make house calls. Find a mechanic, any mechanic, make an appointment. Take the car to the appointment and get the car inspected. It should take less than one hour. If the seller refuses to allow an inspection then you need to find another car. They are hiding something. |
