Question: Lap child during take-off and landing? Posted: 23 Jul 2014 01:08 AM PDT I am retired from the FAA as a field inspector and accident investigator, having a child in your seat with you during a landing accident is very serious. With the child in your lap, with forward facing seats all the intera from the aircraft will cause your body to bend at the hips forward crushing your child very quickly. Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity, like your head. Your head weighs about 20lbs and there is no way during a sudden stop you are going to be able to sit straight up in your seat. Most people in a sudden stop sitting up because of the intera may lose their head as the body swings forward. For this reason, people are told to bend forward as far as they can to prevent the 20lbs of head from swinging forward. On your next flight take the passenger briefing card out and read the emergency procedures. If it were me, I would put the child in a car seat strapped in and now take a chance of crushing a child. However, say all that check with your airline and see if they allow small childern, most do up to a certain age. |
Question: Why is my package stuck in Shanghai, China? Posted: 22 Jul 2014 09:19 PM PDT Why is my package stuck in Shanghai, China? I ordered a custom built laptop from HP, it shipped from Chongqing, China to Shanghai, China where it has bee, quote "at local FedEx facility" for 4 days. The estimated arrival date for my laptop is this Friday, and thus very unlikely, even if it was to get boarded on a plane tonight (in china) it most likely won't be here by Friday, so why is it stuck in Shanghai, and when is a accurate estimte for its arrival. |
Posted: 22 Jul 2014 07:24 PM PDT Do not even think of major airlines - But you could try the regional airlines, and the commercial operators (non-sked) like Polar Air, Southern Air, Kalitta Air - but to get to fly with these you will have to pay a type rating ($20,000) with a 747, and do the ATP at the same time - With a regional airline, expect $20,000 as first officer as yearly salary - With the commercial operators expect $40,000 yearly salary to start as a first officer - Kalitta Air presently hiring - Southern Air presently hiring - |
Question: Is the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 a safe plane? Posted: 22 Jul 2014 03:23 PM PDT If it is an older plane, then of course it isn't going to be as technologically advanced structure and mechanically wise, but if it was to pose a real danger, it would not be in the air. If they saw bolts falling off or it was rusting, then it would be deemed unsafe and will not be in service. I prefer the modern boeing and airbuses but I wouldn't be put off of flying in an older aircraft |
