Question: Can you sail a 420 or a JY single-handed? Posted: 13 Jul 2014 12:37 PM PDT People sail around the world singlehanded on 50+ foot boats, a 420 or JY is a breeze if you know what you are doing. I'd keep saving and get a day sailer/weekender with a small cabin and swing keel. |

Question: How to grease the steering cable on a sterndrive boat? Posted: 13 Jul 2014 08:39 AM PDT You don't- the steering cable is not a serviceable part. The cable end is pre-lubricated with a PTFE based lubricant before installation and should never require lubrication. If your steering is stiff, first determine if the problem is with the stern drive or the steering system. Disconnect the steering cable from the steering arm on the inner transom assembly. If you can now turn the helm easily, the problem is with the stern drive- worn or dry swivel pins. If the steering is still difficult to turn, the problem is with the cable or helm- replace the cable and helm as an assembly. |
Posted: 13 Jul 2014 07:27 AM PDT While running my 1987 Mercury 60 HP everything was working fine, suddenly i dropped to about half power and all electronics stopped working.? I checked my bilge and lights before taking off and all was fine. I ran the motor up the lake for about 5 minutes when this happened. The front and back trim also stopped, but the middle still works. None of my other electronics are working now. If anyone can give me a suggestion as to where to start that would be great. |
Question: When did you get into boating and how is the hobby? Posted: 13 Jul 2014 02:25 AM PDT I was always fascinated by water , even as a toddler , and growing up in Norwich right by the Norfolk broads and with the sea beaches only half an hour away on the bus I had plenty of opportunity to play in and on the water . They say Norfolk Coots ( people from the Broadland wetlands , nicknamed for the local bird ) learn to sail before they learn to walk , and it is true that we are semi-amphibious . As a child in the late 50's + early 60s there wasn't much money in the family and so we were sent to join our local Sea-Scouts , so from 8 years old we'd all be out in boats and canoes , often doing trips and camping along the riverbanks , all summer long . Sometimes we'd go farther afield , with sail training ships and youth-yachts , to and fro across the North sea and the English channel . And at school I took the Sailing option when we got to choose our sport , got tipped out of an Enterprise sailing dinghy on Hickling broad one October in full school uniform including blazer , and dragged across the mud bottom trying to arrest it's progress into the reeds . Had several sailing half-deckers and small cabin yachts of my own as a young man , several Yeoman and Kinsman , which go to windward like a rat up a drainpipe , used to rig them with small sails off old dinghies and take them out in mid-winter in screaming hooleys , only boat out . Plus some of my former buddies and I would hire bigger yachts and go for a jolly most years , been around the Aegean like that in a bare-boat charter . Nowadays the boats are very cheap to buy ( once they wern't ! ) but the cost of licenses , insurance , mooring and maintenance is very high . Plus Age and infirmity has begun to strike so I dont get out on the water as often as I'd like any more , and dont own a boat now , but I still love the water and like to be near it , and still get the hankering to go voyaging - nothing like it . You get to feel the same things as Leif Eriksonn , and Francis Drake , and Nelson did , and you are alone and entirely responsible for your safety and wellbeing and comfort in a way few other people experience nowadays . |
