Question: How do you land a plane when there's No Visibility? Posted: 05 Sep 2015 02:07 AM PDT Skippers answer is the correct technical answer. It's possible to land a plane 'blind" if all the stars are aligned. But basically, if there is zero visibility, they DON'T land. An instrument approach is usually made, and if they get to ~100m above the ground, and still cant see anything, they abort and go around. This is why all flights carry reserve fuel, to allow them to fly to another airport in case their destination is fogged in. Or they may circle and try again if the weather is clearing, keeping an eye on the fuel gauges and how much they need to get to the backup airport. Sucks if you have been on a plane for 12 hours and Auckland is fogged in. The divert for a wide body jet is the Air Force base an hour South at Ohakea. With no terminal or customs. So they land there, top up the fuel, and everyone waits in the plane until the airport is clear. Then take off again, fly for another hour and eventually get there. 12 hour flight just became 18... |

I knew the 7 Corsairs F4U or FG1 which were in Van Nuys airport in the 1970's - The Corsairs belonged to a few lawyers and doctors who figured how to get a pilot license - Nowadays, you wish to talk to wartime pilots - talk to Vietnam veterans - I am 71 of age - I flew KC-135 refueling B-52's in the Vietnam theater - |
Posted: 04 Sep 2015 12:21 PM PDT Let's compare the sizes: The 787 - 8 holds about 242 passengers in a typical layout, and can hold a max of around 380. The 767 - 300 holds 218 - 290 passengers. The 787 - 9 holds 290 - 420 passengers, while the 767 - 400 holds 245 - 375 passengers. The 787 may be made out of lighter materials, but due to its bigger size, it's heavier. If it were made out of the same type of aluminum alloys as the 767, it would be even heavier. |
