Posted: 13 Sep 2015 04:59 AM PDT Yup, you're liable. Liable doesn't mean you did anything wrong, it just means you're legally responsible for loss or damage that happened. That's how it works when you're the owner. Picture it like this: If you own your house and your water heater blows up for whatever reason, it's entirely your responsibility. Not because you did anything wrong or failed to take precautions, but because there is simply nobody else who is responsible for it. If you rent the house, however, you can call up the landlord and say "hey sucker, get me a new water heater". Because that stuff is the owner's responsibility. Same deal with owning a car. The only way you could maybe possibly be off the legal hook would be if you can prove who did it in court. But if all you have is a statement that it couldn't have been you who left the parking brake loose, that's not enough. |
Question: What happens if things were stolen in my car? Posted: 13 Sep 2015 01:57 AM PDT As far as your auto policy is concerned, nothing happens. Auto theft insurance only covers the vehicle, not things that were carried in it. If you have home insurance (homeowners, condo owners, tenant) that provides contents / personal property coverage, that's where you claim compensation for stolen items. |
Question: Just got into a car accident, what do I do?? Freaking out? Posted: 13 Sep 2015 01:34 AM PDT Was there a light? Was there a stop sign? 3 way or 4 way stop? If he was speeding, the only way to prove that is to call the police so they can investigate and would be able to tell from the damage and any skid marks. Did you exchange phone numbers with him? If so, he will probably get an estimate for damage and will expect you to pay it since you said you would. If you don't pay it, he will probably take you to court and you'll have to tell your side and you'll both be sited for driving without insurance, and the judge will decide who pays for what damages. |
