Posted: 05 Sep 2015 11:38 PM PDT For troubleshooting, try disconnecting the right rear speaker output at the back of the head unit, and see if the rest of ths speakers then play normally. To me it sounds like one of your speaker wires is intermittently shorted to ground. The pop from the right rear suggests the problem may be in that area. You can test the speaker wires from the back of the head unit, using a continuity function between the speaker wire and the chassis ground wire, or a metal part of the sub-dash. A shorted speaker wire will cause the head unit's internal amplifier to shut down for protection, so none of the speakers play. |
Question: How much would a new sound system for my car cost? Posted: 05 Sep 2015 11:00 PM PDT You can figure about $40+ a pair for door speakers, more obviously for higher performance speakers, but for a 23 year old econobox, I'm not sure why you'd want to spend very much money in performance speakers. And yes, you can add additional speakers, though you might want to look a little deeper as it's odd for a passenger car to only have 2 speakers. I'd bet there's 4, or at least mounting locations for another 2 in the rear. Even if there's not, just find a surface in the car of sufficient size to mount a speaker, and chop a hole to drop it into and run some small speaker wire up to the head unit. The only thing is you probably won't get real good sound from them if they weren't originally designed to exist there. To answer your main question regarding the cost, you can figure, at a minimum, $40 per pair of speakers, $140 for a small subwoofer amp from reputable brand(no Boss, Pyle, Lanzar cheap crap), $40 for 1 subwoofer, $35 for 1 subwoofer enclosure, $40 for subwoofer amplifier wiring kit. Considering you already have a head unit, this is about the minimum you can expect to pay for new components that are worth a damn. Obviously if you want louder, more powerful, better quality components, you'll obviously end up paying more. But what I quoted you will provide a pretty decent 250W~ upgrade from a basic, 23 year old factory system. If you're trying to get like 1,000W then you'll probably want an additional amplifier for your speakers, and a more powerful amp and 2nd subwoofer in a really good enclosure. |
