Question: I want to become a pilot but I'm scared of thunderstorms, tips? Posted: 24 Dec 2015 01:21 AM PST Most of flying of airplanes is avoiding thunderstorms (looking on weather radar) - My personal policy was to avoid thunderstorm clouds by some 25+ nautical miles distance - I flew about 56 years of my flying life (military and airlines) with a total of 26,500 hours - The airplanes I flew with got hit something like 12, maybe 15 or 20 lightning strikes...? Everyday, there are various airliners hit 100, maybe 200 or 300 times by lightning, worldwide - |
Question: What's the purpose of an aircraft's horizontal stabilizers? Posted: 23 Dec 2015 09:31 PM PST planes move in 3 dimensions. to control this movement, a plane needs to be able to move up and down and turn. to move up and down, horizontal stabilizers along with elevators provide an airplane with the stability and control it needs to be able to point up or down. this lets the plane climb or descend as required. |
