Question: Which would you say is safer for a new driver? a scooter or a motorcycle? Posted: 05 Dec 2015 06:16 PM PST The basic difference between scooters and motorcycles is that scooters are transportation devices and motorcycles are recreation devices--though of course their functions overlap considerably. Scooters are all about being easy to ride vs 'fun' to ride (though they are fun!) They have automatic transmissions so you just twist the handle to go, pull the levers (or step on a pedal) to stop. If you can ride a bicycle, you could just hop on a scooter and ride it home. They have a low center of gravity for stability (at the cost of super-sharp handling). Generally they're smaller, 50cc to 250cc, for cities and secondary roads and the occasional short jaunt on the freeway (the 250cc model). But today there are 650cc 'touring' scooters that you could ride across the continent. Motorcycles are generally faster (they -start- at 250cc and go up from there), sportier, more stuff to learn. Larger motorcycles, like the big Harley Davidsons, are a little clumsy in the city. A lot of us motorcyclists began on scooters. I started on a Lambretta, years ago. I got it for school and work, but I loved riding it so much I found myself going on 100-mi. trips on weekends, so I got a bigger regular motorcycle. But many motorcyclists today look back fondly on their first Vespa or whatever. |
