Because the air pressures above and below the wing are different, the surrounding air tends to flow along the wing, inwards on top of the wing and outwards below the wing, Where these flows meet, at the wingtip, they form a vortex, a kind of horizontal mini-tornado. This is where it gets complicated. Producing that vortex takes energy and the energy comes from the movement of the wing. That use of energy means that there is less energy to be used to make the wing go forward, in other words, there is energy working against the movement of the wing. We call that energy ''Drag''. The winglet is designed to either, stop the two flows mixing, or, to reduce the size of the vortex and thus the energy used to create it, thereby reducing the drag. They can even be a bit cleverer than that, because they can also have a positive angle of attack and themselves produce lift in the direction the wing is traveling, not only reducing the energy wasted in drag, but actually producing a nett thrust. |

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:01 PM PST To my opinion, helicopters are harder to fly than airplanes - In the 1970's, I had a girlfriend who was helicopter pilot for TV traffic reporting in Los Angeles - I flew 3 times with her, some 3 hours total... told me to abandon... a worthless fixed-wing idiot...! I have flown many types of airplanes - consider them much easier to handle than helicopter - Of all the airplanes I flew, the 747 was probably the easiest to handle (very stable and forgiving) - |
Question: Why dont helicopters use their exhaust to move forward? Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:56 AM PST The way turboshaft engines are designed, there is essentially no thrust left in the exhaust. Since that power is all directed to the shaft and therefore to the rotor, it makes more sense to get the propulsion from said rotor than trying to count on the exhaust of the engine, which would actually be working against you when hovering, or landing, where you do NOT want any forward thrust anyway. There is zero advantage to gain from reducing the % power that goes to the rotor and direct it to the thrust, plenty of inconvenience and efficiency losses, so that is pretty much why we don't do it. |
