Posted: 25 Aug 2015 09:46 AM PDT Traveling to Arizona later in the week , we had planned on riding . Now she says " Oh , it's going to be too hot , lets drive ." I hate being locked in a sheet metal box for hours at a time . So what do you think ,,, should I just ride myself and meet her there ,,, or go in the car with her ? |

Posted: 25 Aug 2015 09:31 AM PDT Different providers worldwide = different answers. But all buses need regular maintenance and bus fleets often get rotated regularly between maintenance facilities and different depots. Older buses get disposed of, newer buses replace them, and some buses are lost due to accident damage. Fleets also get replaced if legislation changes; many years ago the company I work for (a specialist part of London Buses) replaced many vehicles because they could not be updated to accommodate the fitting of compulsory seat belts. Now we face replacing nearly 500 vehicles in the next few years because of new clean air regulations and that will likely require a move away from diesel engines to petrol-electric hybrids or wholly electric models (I'll love to see how they last an entire 16 hour working day in the depths of winter...). It's not a school bus fleet but a fleet of accessibility buses, but the principles are identical. On top of that, drivers go sick, retire, go on holiday, or go on training courses/get promoted/sacked, so it's in everyone's interest that drivers also get rotated between runs to ensure multiple redundancy of competent drivers on various routes. You know whether you're asking about a tiny scale operation in the middle of nowhere or a big city-wide operation, so use that information to choose your own answer. |
