Check engine light still on after replacing alternator?

I went to Tijuana on Saturday. On my way back, I ran the air conditioner and the battery light turned on. I didn't think much of it, and kept my air on. As soon as I crossed, my car turned off completely in the freeway! I got to the side, and had a mechanic check it out. It was my alternator, according to him. Someone gave me a jump and when I turned the car on, the check engine light was on, along with my battery light. After getting it to a mechanic shop, I replaced my old one to a new one, and the battery light isn't on anymore, but check engine is still on. Why? My car seems to go better then it did before, it shifts gears faster now, and goes faster at a faster rate, is that normal because of a alternator? I took it to auto zone right after and they checked my battery and said it was bad, is it bad? Or is it only that iI drove it only half a block away from when the new one got put in? The guy said it should last about a month before I should get a new battery.. is that how it should be? I don't know nothing about cars... at all. First car:-/
