Posted: 22 Aug 2015 06:45 AM PDT The dealer can only work in their own state, therefore, in Illinois, you will get the title transferred in Illinois, with Illinois temporary registration. You will need to get back to Missouri to permanently register it there. You can use the various paperwork you get from the dealer, to bring to MO DMV to get it transferred to your state. Talk to your MO DMV about the process, what you need to bring, costs, etc. If you paid cash, the title will be sent from the statehouse (Springfield IL) to your home within a month or two. You only need the temporary registration from IL and other sales documents to register it for the first time in MO. You will probably also need an inspection. Visit your local DMV office, for shorter lines, visit mid week mornings are often less busy than weekends, lunchtime, or late afternoons. People do this fairly often, especially in border cities (states: AR, MS, TN, KY, KS, OK, IL, IN), therefore, you shouldn't be worried about the process. Call ahead, get the details, ensure you bring proper documentation. If you need an inspection, you may need to get it done before registration, but they can help get things lined up, and in what order. ![]() |
Question: Driving with an expired license fine in MO? Posted: 22 Aug 2015 04:48 AM PDT The court penalty isn't that bad. A few hundred in fines, and maybe a naughty-naughty point or two against your official driving record. It's a minor conviction, the equivalent of having a headlight out or doing 10 over the limit. But there's more than just the penalty. If you're stopped and charged, the cops have another problem if you're alone in the vehicle. They can't leave it sitting on the road unattended, because that's not safe. They also can't let you drive it home, because that's totally not safe. And both are against the law. That leaves them with one option: The vehicle has to be towed to a lot somewhere. Towing and daily lot fees vary by location, but they're not cheap. Where I live, $250 for the tow and $90 per day in lot fees isn't unusual. That cost has to be paid in full by the owner. The owner also has to provide a valid licence, plus proof of valid registration and insurance before the vehicle can be released. Those costs add up really quickly, just so you know. Also just so you know, getting pulled over is the easy stuff. If you're in a crash of any kind, the bill just got a whole lot bigger. Your insurance policy has a clause (they all do) saying that unlicensed (including expired) drivers are not covered, no exceptions. They won't say it like that, it will say "if the driver is not authorized by law to operate the vehicle" in the "loss or damage not insured" section. They always put that condition in, and it stands up in court. That means if you blow a stop sign, or mow down a pedestrian by accident, your insurance company can back out of paying for anything and get away with it. That leaves you holding all the bills. ![]() |

Question: I have a vin swapped car.? Posted: 22 Aug 2015 02:16 AM PDT USA answer: If you have a valid title for the car and the VIN on the dash near the windshield match the VIN on the car's title, I wouldn't worry about a non matching firewall VIN. It is common (and legal) to use other parts on a car. Doing so is not a cause for worry. ![]() |
