Question: Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to become fighter pilot? Posted: 19 Aug 2015 09:35 AM PDT You've completely swallowed their advertising propaganda hook, line and sinker. Going to ERAU won't help you any more than any other school with an AFROTC program. In fact, going through a professional pilot program and getting a professional pilot type of degree isn't going to help you at all as far as becoming a military aviator. You'd be better off going through an engineering program and just getting a private pilots certificate at most .The Air Force would rather train you their way from scratch because it is harder to break undesirable habits than instill new ones from the get-go. Military and civilian flying are very different so it would work against you to go all the way through the civilian ratings. In fact, if you can just get through the solo stage of private pilot training that's all you really need to show basic aptitude. After that, anything else is an unnecessary expenditure of money. Get an engineering degree, graduate with a 3.8 or better GPA, ace the ASFAB test the first time, be in top physical condition,. and get high marks and recommendations in AFROTC. That's what it will take to even be considered. Even then, they only take about 8 out of every 100 fully qualified candidates, and then one of those will wash out of pilot training on average. If you are one of the lucky ones selected for pilot training and you succeed in earning your wings, you had better rank at or near the top of your class of you won't get a shot at fighters. To put that in perspective, you've probably got a better chance of becoming a pro baseball player, but if you don't try, you can't succeed. Whether you want to spend $260,000 on an undergraduate degree and pilot training from ERAU is up to you, but going there is not going to confer any special privileges or give you any greater opportunities than getting educated at a State College that is affordable and going to yout local flight school. If you want to go to Riddle, fine, it won't hurt you, but I can also tell you that when a employers see Embry-Riddle on a resume, they're often thinking "rich kid with an attitude". |

Question: Best airplane for me to buy? Posted: 19 Aug 2015 02:13 AM PDT The Icon A5 is a 2-seater. You wanted 4-5 seats. I'm assuming you have a regular license, not a light sport, otherwise you wouldn't be looking for 4 or 5 seat aircraft. It's hard to go wrong with a Cessna 172. It can be equipped with floats, and had provisions for a pilot plus three passengers. Yeah, it's the Toyota Camry of general aviation aircraft, but it gets the job done. |
