Question: 1979 Johnson 35hp Seahorse will not engage in any gear? Posted: 19 Oct 2015 07:11 AM PDT I have an older 1979 Johnson 35 with teleflex steering and controls for throttle and gear shifting. It fires right up and runs like a champ. However I cannot get the motor to engage into any gear currently. A few weeks ago I got the motor out on the water for its first voyage in my possession. Everything went pretty well. I had an issue at first only having reverse and no forward, so I adjusted the cable from the controls and was able to get it to work, but only going into forward and no reverse. Shortly after, the shift lock PN #0322233 snapped at the bottom "hook" end where it had been pretty rusty and weak. I could no longer engage the motor in any gear and I had a buddy tow me in. I ordered the new shifter lock, and installed it. It all seemed pretty plug and play to me at the time. Once I had the new shift lock in, the mechanics of it seemed to feel back to normal, but there was no actual gear selection happening. I'm curious what my next step should be. I've considered that maybe the linkage from the lower unit that comes up and meets the shift and adjustment lever PN #388655 has broken or separated. From what I've read, the powerhead needs to come apart to get to this linkage assembly. Is there something else that I am just not thinking of that I could try troubleshooting first that would be less labor intensive? Thanks! |

Question: Why are boats expensive to maintain? Posted: 18 Oct 2015 04:31 PM PDT I take it you have never owned a boat right? Water tends to encourage corrosion and rot, and even composites break down due to flexing and UV light. So trust me, there are LOTS of things that can (and do) go wrong with ANY boat. |
