Question: How to pass your drivers test? Posted: 18 Oct 2015 06:40 PM PDT Always shoulder check at every turn, even switching lanes, and even turning at a stop sign. Check your rare view mirror every 10 seconds, keep a comfortable following distance, and come to slow, gradual stops. Even if you feel comfortable and know it's safe, your instructor doesn't as he's driving with you for the first time. Be aware of your surroundings, make sure to not miss any signs. Don't overstress it, as long as you're comfortable and they're comfortable, all you have to do is drive well and follow all the driving rules :) Good luck. Question: How to pull out of an intersection onto the highway? Posted: 18 Oct 2015 09:27 AM PDT Obviously you look both ways, if you crossing a lane, if you are turning right you really only need to look to the left. Double and triple check if need be, and make sure to judge the oncoming car's speed and, this is important, get up to the speed of the road quickly yourself. In other words, when there's a chance to pull on to the highway, do so quickly and not slowly so the car behind you can doesn't end up on your bumper. You'll get the hang of it.

Question: How much would it cost to travel 180 miles away and stay a night? Posted: 18 Oct 2015 08:44 AM PDT 180 miles is a little more than 3/4 tank of gas, for most cars that might be $50-70 round trip. (Fill up before you leave (that doesn't count), Fill up when you get to your destination, and again when you get home. Add those two fill ups as your fuel/transportation cost. You can look online to book the room ahead by a week or two, you can usually get the room cheaper than the listed room rate. Even if you book it a day or two in advance, you might get lucky and get a discount rate. Consider a 25% luxury state tax rate. If you pay in advance, it's all included in the price you "prepay", when you book the room. That price is your room cost, expect $75-90. If you eat out, the cost depends on the restaurant you choose. Hotel restaurants are always very expensive, but Red Roof Inn, doesn't have a restaurant. Dining expense, expect $30-50 to include a full day's food plus dinner the night before. 70+90+50 about $200-$250 max, roughly half of what your parents projected. Of course, if you budgeted $500 you could stay at a much better hotel. I would highly recommend upgrading to a Best Western, Clarion, Courtyard by Mariott, Holiday Inn Express, for a slightly higher room rate, but more enjoyable stay. Hotels.com, Orbitz, and many other travel sites are good for hunting for good deals on hotel rooms. The night that you stay overnight does matter. Prices in the middle of the week are usually lower priced than on weekends for hotels. |
Question: What's your opinion on constant lane switching/"traffic weaving"? Posted: 17 Oct 2015 09:32 PM PDT I'm from the D.C. area where the passing/turning lane does not exist. What people generally do is whichever lane is going the fastest they'll stay in. However, unfortunately, if you are not going the flow of traffic it can be VERY, VERY dangerous. I try to keep the right for driving/left for passing though. I see a lot of fast, nice cars do this often where they will change lanes/weave through, like tonight. Do people do this to really get to their destination quicker, for the thrill, or for fun? If you have done this, why do you do it? |
