Posted: 20 Mar 2015 10:57 PM PDT Yes. People come up with all sorts of fancy words to make the job sound more important or prestigious, but the license in your pocket still says "Mechanic." Don't expect to get rich while turning wrenches on airplanes. The average starting salary for an aircraft mechanic in the USA is less than $20 per hour, while a mechanic with seniority, working for an airline in a union shop could make nearly double that amount. Figure in the exchange rate for Canadian dollars and the money should be about the same. For that kind of money, you get to work outdoors in all sorts of mostly uncomfortable weather. Work 12-hour night shifts on your feet and take CRAP from everybody who thinks they know more than you because they are Sky God pilots, while you are just a dumb mechanic. All that, while the FAA (or similar regulatory agency) is watching over your shoulder and waiting to pounce the second that you make a mistake or fail to follow some obscure and outdated rule or procedure. You put your license on the line every time you sign a piece of paper, and if the plane crashes 20 years from now, YOU will be held responsible and COULD go to jail. That's why I left aviation and went to driving truck for a living. Less stress and better working conditions. |

Question: Can I get a new single engine piston aircraft (pefer cessna) for 50k or less? Posted: 20 Mar 2015 05:32 PM PDT New? No. The cheapest new Cessna, the Model C-172, costs $364,000, base price. For $50,000 or less you're looking at an aircraft built before 1985. Do not judge an aircraft by its age, you judge it by its condition. I fly one that was built in 1960, paid less than $30k for it and it is in very good condition and well maintained with a low time engine. |
