Question: Would a Classic Porsche 911 still be considered "cool" by today's standard? Posted: 21 Mar 2015 08:07 AM PDT I think that jealous people would be more of an issue than anything. And being made fun of? Just be wittier than they are and don't worry about it. More seriously there are some considerations. The car is over 40 years old and will need quite a bit of maintenance. The issue there is if you can afford the money and/or time to keep it running. Ask your uncle how much he spends a year on it, assuming he's kept it in good shape, and see if you can afford that, and remember it will not be nearly as reliable as a more modern car. Also, insurance will be an issue, so check the rates or even if the company will insure it. Finally, a classic 911 is much different than today's cars. You will not have airbags, traction control, ABS, power steering or other modern safety and convenience features. You also won't be able to take more than one friend anywhere. Additionally, it won't be that powerful by today's standards. New most 911s of that era made less than 200 HP, and it would have even less now, so if you're picturing yourself having the fastest car in the land, you won't: many stock Civics and Mazda 3s will be faster. (You would have one of the most responsive cars ever made, however). It's also rear wheel drive, can oversteer quickly and, if it does, the only device capable of correcting it is you. So, you really need to be a competent driver if you push it, or it will bite you. So I'd consider those things and have a serious talk with your uncle and other adults in your life and decide if that's the best choice of a car for you. It definitely won't be the practical choice, quite the opposite, in fact. If you do decide to go get it, please concentrate and really learning how to drive and handle it and make sure you can really afford it. |
