Question: Is 15 hp johnosn outboard to small for 16 ft aluminum boat? Posted: 28 Mar 2015 03:59 PM PDT If it's a "speed boat" it will have a hull designed for planing, where the boat is travelling fast enough to lift mostly out of the water, and this reduces drag. Running a planing hull below planing speed is very inefficient. For a lower power you want a "displacement" hull. This is more like a sail or row boat hull, and is designed to slip through the water at lower speed, using less power, but still getting a sensible speed. So there are hulls that you can push around at sensible speed, without getting up to planing speed. Other hulls will be a complete dog without enough power, as you can't plane OR slip through the water smoothly like a displacement design. |
