| Question: Where can I find information on full time canal/narrow boat travel in the USA ? Posted: 18 Mar 2015 06:29 PM PDT A good place to begin would be to read Terry Darlington's great book, 'Narrow Dog To India River". At the time of writing the book while on his voyage, with wife Monica and whippet*, Jim; from Norfolk, Virginia all the way down to Fort Myers on the Mexican Gulf in Florida, his 60ft English narrowboat Phillis May was almost certainly unique in the United States of America. (He shipped it over and then back home to the UK afterwards). "Now you want to sail down the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It is eleven hundred miles long. There are sea crossings bigger than the English Channel. There are flies. There are alligators. There are winds that blow at two hundred miles an hour. Ten thousand people drowned in Galveston and look what happened in New Orleans. And you want to sail down it in a canal boat six feet ten inches wide."¹ (Monica. She's exaggerating just a tiny bit, there! … :) It is an excellent, hilarious and informative read. To get a 'flavour', visit his website at: http://www.narrowdog.com/us_pictures.htm Another good source of information is Captain John's ² website "America's Great Loop & Beyond". It is highly informative and I have read it in full. Don't forget to keep clicking on the 'next' button in the bottom, R/H corner of each page at: http://www.captainjohn.org/GL-2-Intro.ht... Another really good read! ______________________ * A dog of a small slender breed originally produced as a cross between the greyhound and the terrier or spaniel, bred for racing. | Question: How should I despider my kayak? Posted: 18 Mar 2015 05:12 PM PDT I haven't took my kayak out last two years Im sure to have some bugs and spiders in side of it. What would be the best way to remove them from my boat? I was thinking about just flooding the boat with a garden hose but that would take to much water. |
| Question: Might sound crazy, but I'd like to build my own pontoon boat? Posted: 18 Mar 2015 03:51 PM PDT How many years of welding experience and what type of TIG welder do you have? If you can't afford a used pontoon, you won't be able to afford the tools and raw materials to build one. You can buy an old one with no motor for less than 1000 bucks, clean it up, toss some paint on it and throw a cheap old engine on it. If you can't do that, how would you build one from scratch? |
