| Question: Beginner Bike Info Needed? Posted: 17 Mar 2015 09:59 PM PDT Modern motorcycles don't need a lot of maintenance. You change the oil, adjust the chain (if there is one), new tires as necessary, maybe a new clutch once in a while. And spark plugs. Periodic maintenance. Some people buy older bikes to get them running and fiddle with, and sometimes take to vintage bike meets. That's a whole different hobby because you spend as much or more time fiddling with the bike than riding it. But you spend the most time of all waiting for parts. So if you want to do both of these, you really need two bikes. One to ride, one to fix mostly and ride sometimes. Beginner bike. Should be used, maybe 5-10 years old. All the Japanese mfgrs are very good. European bikes are beautiful and sexy and wonderful but Japanese bikes give you the most for your money. Three categories: 1. Small. 250-300cc, like the Kawasaki Ninja 300 or Honda CBR 300. (Both used to be 250, also good). There are others in this class. These bikes are designed as trainers, like a gentle little pony to learn to ride on. But they are seriously good machines and you might never outgrow them. Their only real limit is that they're not ideal for long trips at highway speed. They are all the motorcycle you will ever need up to about 50 mph. 2. 'Medium sized' Standard. General-purpose motorcycles between 500-650cc, mostly twins but some fours. Kawsaki Ninja 500 and 650, Honda 599, Suzuki GS500 or SV650 or V-Strom 650, Yamaha F6r 'Fazer'. Lots of other models. Some of these are styled very sporty but they are not sportbikes (like, CBR, GSX-R, R6, etc). You want to stay away from sportbikes because they are very special-purpose. Harder to ride, harder to learn on. 3. Medium-sized cruiser. If you don't mind cruisers they have some real advantages as a first bike. They are very easy to ride, they have lower centers of gravity which means you can't throw them into corners but they are more stable, they feel lighter than they really are. The Honda Shadow 750 is outrageously popular, has been around for decades. Also Yamaha Star, Kawasaki Vulcan, Suzuki Boulevard M80 or C80. Vintage bike. I have only one suggestion, an old BMW 'Airhead'. The air-cooled flat twin made up to the late 80s. If you found a nice one it would still be pretty reliable, you can do most of the work yourself, in fact the bike is designed to be easy to work on. Parts are available because there are so many of them still around. And it is a very nice bike to ride. I have a 1978 myself, an R80/7. |
