| Question: Buying a 76 mercury grand marquis? Posted: 18 Mar 2015 04:28 PM PDT I am an 68 y-o male. In '87 I bought a '76 Ford LTD (same car 'cept the badges) 4-dr, for the specific use of safely carrying my young daughters. It had 75K miles on it when I bought it, it had 150K miles when it went to the junkyard in 2004. I KNOW what I am talking about. Which engine does your has? We had the 460 V8, C6 auto transmission. I had it weighed -- it was a bit over 5,000 pounds. You have taken Physics in high school? Forces? Accelerations when two masses hit? When a 2,500 pound car hits a 5,000 pound car the the occupants of the lesser car has double the acceleration of the greater. The car has a steel boxed frame. The frame widens for the passenger area -- the frame protects the sides. It has steel beams inside the doors. The front/rear bumpers are steel beams mounted on hydraulic rams. Saw a thing on TV about a fancy car seat that protected people without seat belts -- it rotated so the the hit was from the bottom. The car was same as our car, as the one you want. Stunt driver said, "sure, right." He drove the car to 10 mph into another car -- it worked!! So he tried again, at 20 mph. It worked again! Then he tried it at 50 mph. Which doesn't matter. What I liked was that the big LTD was able to ram another big car at 20 mph -- and was able to continue driving. Nowadays cars are totaled in a 20 mph hit. Bumper Sticker: "My crumple zone is your car." Ignore that city/highway 11 mpg -- I generally got 8 in the city. |
