| Posted: 16 Mar 2015 11:48 PM PDT The bike you learn to ride on should definitely be a used bike. Maybe one with a few dings and bruises already on it, because you are very likely to add more. If you buy carefully you can sell the old beater in six months or a year for about what you paid for it, and you will know better by then what you really want. I don't know where you live, maybe lessons are required, but I don't think lessons help. You learn to ride by riding, that's the only way. If you're in the US, the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) has a beginner class that just teaches you how to handle the motorcycle and some important safety rules to keep you relatively safe while you learn on your own. It's a good idea because learning to ride a motorcycle is even more dangerous than just riding. I would get something Japanese, just the best deal for your money. All the Japanese mfgrs are very good. There are two schools of thought as to size. Some of us here believe you should start on a 250 or 300 because it's small/light, easy to handle, not too much power. I agree, but a 250/300 is not ideal for cruising at highway speeds. If you see yourself riding long distances at 65 or above, I'd say you want at least 500cc, 650 would be better. This is a bigger, heavier bike, but nothing a big guy like you can't handle. And yes, it is enough power to really get you into trouble, but you can get into trouble on the 250 also if you ride like an idiot. It's nice to have a little power in reserve when you want to pass someone on the highway. You don't need to use every HP every second. (And these are not fast bikes, as bikes go these days!) Small bikes - Kawasaki Ninja 250 or 300, Honda CBR 250, probably more that I can't think of right now. Larger bikes - Suzuki GS500 or SV650, Kawasai Ninja 500 or 650 or Versa 650, Honda 599, Yamaha FZ6r. And a lot more models. You could also get a cruiser like Honda Shadow 750. If you don't mind cruisers they have a lot of advantages, mostly that they're just easier to ride. A bike less than 10 years old, lest than, say, 25k miles, you won't have trouble with it. Oil changes, tires, the occasional clutch. They are amazingly reliable these days. But look around for a good independent shop. |
| Question: What happens if this happens? Posted: 16 Mar 2015 11:32 PM PDT It's usually a condition of your finance that you maintain full insurance on the vehicle. Then if it's stolen or written off the insurance company will pay off the loan for you. Without the insurance, you still own any outstanding loan, so you either keep paying or end up with a whole mess of debt collection / court. |
