Question: How do i put in a subwoofer with a stock head unit? Posted: 25 Sep 2016 09:28 PM PDT It's really quite simple. The point you are missing is that while the signal you tap into carries the full spectrum of sound just as you say, the Low Pass Filter on the subwoofer amplifier filters out all frequencies above where you set it. The LPF is otherwise known as a crossover. It's called "low pass" because it only passes the low frequencies. Conversely, with a tweeter, there is a high pass filter used. You cannot simply plug in a subwoofer though. First off, subs need a lot of power, hence the amplifier. A sub also needs to be controlled by a crossover network, and in car audio that feature is built into the subwoofer amplifier. Whether you buy a sub and separate amp, or whether you buy a powered subwoofer that has its own integral amp in the cabinet, a low pass filter is included. It is adjustable so that you can optimize the transition from your other speakers since not all speakers have the same frequency range. |

Posted: 25 Sep 2016 01:00 PM PDT (A) The answer to your question is no. Storage capacitors are pretty much a useless gimmick and a waste of money. Read why: https://axleaddict.com/cars/Car-Audio-CAPACITORS-Why-They-DONT-Work. If your electrical system cannot support the amp and sub on its own without your lights flickering or other problems, then you need a high output alternator, not a capacitor. (B) Peak power is a mostly useless rating. Average continuous power, expressed in watts rms should be the value you refer to. In future, give the make and model number of all equipment so we can check the specs for you. (C) If that is the 2-channel Pioneer A5602 rated 225 watts rms per channel (450 peak) and you are planning to bridge the channels to effectively turn it into a single-channel amp putting out 450w rms (900 peak), your sub needs to be 4 ohm. If is less than 4 ohms it won't work because the channels of a 2-channel amp bridge at 4 ohms. |
Posted: 25 Sep 2016 12:37 PM PDT Wow, this is totally rocket science and a really hard question to answer. After much head scratching and writing multiple complex equations I've come up with 500 watts rms for the answer. Now, the big question is whether the sub has a single 2-ohm voice coil or whether it has dual 2 ohm voice coils? That makes a big difference as to whether you need an amp rated 500w rms at 2 ohms or 4 ohms. If you were clever and thinking ahead, you would have told us the brand and model number of your new subwoofer. That would have allowed us to double-check the specs and suggest a variety of amplifiers. However, if you can afford it, you are in luck today. There is an excellent amp that produces 500 watts at both 2 and 4 ohms, which is unusual because most amps produce half as much power at 4 ohms as they do at 2 ohms. The amp I'm talking about is this one and it is currently on sale at a very deep discount: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_29472_JBL-MS-A5001.html Order one before they're gone.
