Posted: 30 Sep 2016 10:17 AM PDT You could seek a crewing position on a private motor yacht but would need to have a skill set to offer. The most useful ones are from the hospitality industry but crew are expected to be multi-skilled and preferably at least bilingual. A friend of mine does that; she speaks English, French and Italian and on board she cooks, cleans, acts as a concierge, and also has all the required training for advanced first aid and general crewing skills such as docking, mooring, boat launching and recovery. She invested in some of her own training but her employer also sent her on the necessary training courses, and after that it was made clear that she was expected to be available for at least two years service. Her particular floating gin palace does make transatlantic crossings but usually without guests aboard; they tend to join the crew when it arrives in places like Florida, the West Indies, or various Mediterranean ports. Other than the risks of rough seas she hasn't seen real danger. |
Posted: 30 Sep 2016 09:07 AM PDT I was walking along the beach, and saw a rowboat washed ashore with strange items onboard. In the boat was an iron sea chest decorated with ornate designs in sea shell mosaics depicting neptune, dolphins, and sea scenes on it. There was also a paddle on the boat with ornate designs of dolphins on it surrounding three triangles made of shiny glued on foil. Inside the chest was a marble box containing a greyish white powder with a silver ring with the words, "true love waits". and inscriptions on the marble box read Karen Cardinal 1997 - 2016 There was also a blue white and gold banner in the chest that said, " let us steadfastly love one another", alongside a compass case that contained ornate seashell mosaics with the words, "forget me not when far away" around the compass dial, alongside several wooden plaques bearing maps of the Mississippi River and the gulf of mexico. There was a glass canister with tissue paper collage on the side depicting three muses dancing in a circle, and a river with a ferryboat. Inside the jar was a note saying, "may your final voyage be calm, and may your last toll be paid". The jar was full of coins, (was this to pay lockage fees). There was also a glass with the words big Margaret, little Karen, and a painted plaque with the words, Home is where sisters love. There was also a jewelry box with a gold foil trident glued to the lid with the three interlaced triangles of pressed pansy flowers glued over it. Inside this box wasan insignia pin |

Question: What's the best way of finding charter boats? Posted: 30 Sep 2016 05:13 AM PDT 1. Cheapest is NOT best. There are plenty of people who operate as fishing guides even though they aren't trained, licensed, or bonded—and often, they're the least expensive option. If a charter seems surprisingly low in cost, ask the captain to provide license numbers ahead of time, and ask about his or her credentials. There are also guide's associations in most areas; if your captain isn't a member, ask why. 2. Go fishing online, before you go fishing for real. There are plenty of fishing-oriented chat rooms where charter customers go to either praise or vent after a charter. Take it all with a grain of salt since some of the comments could come from people with an ax to grind, but if you detect a trend, take note. 3. Choose the captain, not the boat. You can be on a smaller, slower, or older boat and have a great time. But if the captain's a bummer, you won't have fun no matter how extravagant the boat may be. |
