Question: Are you supposed to let go of the steering wheel after a turn? Posted: 26 Sep 2016 07:59 AM PDT The answer depends upon where in the world you are. As an example, in the UK that would result in a driving test failure. All drivers are taught to feed the wheel through their hands at all times maintaining a positive grip. The logic is that you always maintain control even if the front wheels hit a pothole, get stuck in a rut or a tram track or if they suffer a blowout. Or there may even be a sudden failure of a steering arm. After passing the test most UK/Irish drivers revert perfectly legally to allowing the wheel to self-centre whilst maintaining a loose sliding grip unless they take further lessons to pass an Advanced Driving Test or train to become an Approved Driving Instructor. This is not unique to the UK and even where not required to pass a test is still regarded as best practice for new drivers as it slows down their steering and so forces them to take more time and to allow more thinking time. Roads are not a race track. |
