| Question: What car should I buy? Posted: 18 Sep 2016 06:37 AM PDT If you're on a budget forget about old BMWs. Old BMWs are best bought by people with enough money to have it as a second (or third) car which they enjoy working on and occasionally taking for drives. Having a 20 year old BMW as a daily driver and needing to rely on it will likely be an exercise in frustration. It's nice you have a connection to a BMW mechanic, but upset your girlfriend while you need car help and things may become problematic. An early 90s Mustang 5.0 is not going to feel like a Shelby Cobra. If that's what you're expecting you'll be disappointed. While Mustang parts are easy to find and fairly inexpensive, a lot will depend on how the car has been treated over two decades (as with any used car, but Mustangs tend to get abused more than many others). Insurance will also be high. Then the Camry. Sure, it's a sold, reliable car if it's been maintained well, but it's much different. While it may be called a "sports edition," it's not very sporty. If you're looking for something like that, older Accords can be somewhat fun and engaging, particularly with a manual. So what are you looking for in a car? Personally, I'd look at other options. There are quite a few practical yet fun to drive cars available--particularly compact sedans and hatches--and can be found with manual transmissions. A few include the Mazda 3 and Protege (but watch for rust), Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Subaru Imprezza (I don't think you'll find a passable WRX near those prices and insurance is outrageous). In any case, check insurance rates before buying (by the way when I checked 3 series BMWs were quite reasonable to insure) and as a last step before buying have a mechanic do a pre purchase inspection. |
