| Question: Engine gets hotter when idling? Posted: 19 Sep 2016 04:33 PM PDT As long as the fan is coming on and cooling it down again, you are OK. When you are driving there is plenty of air going though the radiator without the fan being needed. The temperature is controlled by the thermostat, which should keep it around 180F, or the middle of the gauge. But when you stop there is no air flow, so the coolant starts getting hotter. The system notices this and turn on the electric fan when it gets to 190 - 200 or so. After a minute it's cooled back to normal and the fan turns off. A minute later, it's hot again. Repeat until you start driving again. As long as the coolant stays below it's boiling point nothing bad happens. And that's over 212F because of the antifreeze and pressure in the cooling system. |
