Posted: 17 Apr 2015 06:10 PM PDT It was clear that the market wasn't and still isn't favorable to passenger trains except for the northeast and some commuter trains in big cities. after ww2 they lost because planes and the interstates were better and faster. the taxpayers OVERWHELMINGLY BEGGED for airports and Interstates and better roads to be in their cities and towns and were totally willing to pay for it. meanwhile they wanted the trains to go away and today passenger trains still can't even profit even with govt tube feeding them. and yeah roads and airports don't make money but people want roads and airports. they don't want passenger trains for the most part |

Posted: 15 Apr 2015 10:29 PM PDT The first uses of steam engines for transport were in the late 1700s in road vehicles and boats. However, the roads of the period were mainly un-paved and unsuitable for heavy steam-powered vehicles. The steam railway locomotive was invented in 1804 when Richard Trevithick was engaged by Samuel Homfray, an ironmaster in South Wales, to win a large bet with Anthony Hill of an ironworks in Plymouth, SW England, that steam power could haul ten tons of coal over the ten miles over the tramway between Pen-y-Darren and the Glamorganshire Canal at Abercynon Basin. This was the first time that anyone had thought of mounting a steam engine on rails, which would be more suitable for supporting the weight. Thereafter, a number of steam locomotives were built and employed at mines and quarries, particularly in the north of England. Impetus to this development was given by the Napoleonic wars between Britain and France at the time which caused a severe shortage of horses for pulling the wagons on the tramroads and plate-ways. In 1825 the first public steam-powered railway was opened between Stockton and Darlington, and from this time onwards steam railway locomotives and public railway lines began to appear in other countries outside of the UK, initially with British-built locomotives. Thereafter, there was an explosion of railway development - particularly in the USA. There were only 23 miles of railroads in the USA in 1930, but this figure increased to around 1000 miles within five years. |
