Question: Will I have an argument to plead not guilty when I exceeded the speed limit to overtake another vehicle throwing rocks at my car?

No argument in your favor there - the thing to do is increase your following distance.

Weird as it seems, unless the trucks tires were spinning on the pavement the rocks were being thrown up and forward: any point on the tire tread scribes a cycloid so rocks are simply lofted to where you run into them. Stay back farther and don't run into them until they fall. Assume the rocks are lofted straight up (worst case that is blocked by the truck's body) to a height of 10 feet, then they fall to the ground. That is 20 feet in free fall. At 32 ft/sec/sec the rocks hit the road after .55 seconds of flight. If you are following any legal distance (2 - 4 seconds) the rocks will not hit your car.

Question: Who do I make mney order out to for seat belt ticket?
