Question: Should I replace this chain? Posted: 10 Apr 2015 05:16 PM PDT You should clean it and lube it and adjust it correctly. Once you have done that, you can ride the bike an listen for the chain. Look at the chain as you roll the rear wheel forward, is it kinked? does the bottom run roll smoothly or does it rise and fall as you roll the rear wheel? Are the sprockets obviously worn or are any teeth broken. If the chain is kinked after you clean it, if the chain run rises and falls or if the sprockets or teeth are worn or broken it's time to change the chain and sprockets. Another test is to try to pull the chain off the rear of the sprocket. Use your fingers and try to pull the chain straight back off the rear side of the sprocket. If the chain lifts off significantly (more than a few mm), then the chain is worn and the chain and sprockets need to be replaced. Chains on a GS500f can last 20,000 miles with proper care and an adult rider. |
