Question: What does red "BRAKE" light indicate? Posted: 17 Nov 2014 05:45 PM PST The red brake warning light has been red for many years. In fact, pretty much all cars with a brake warning light, they're red, unless there is a digital readout. The cause is either: low brake fluid or a bad sensor on the brake fluid bottle, or a park brake switch. Check the brake fluid level to start with, that is the answer 99.99% of the time. |

Question: Oil pressure erratic, engine died, won't start.? Posted: 17 Nov 2014 05:41 PM PST I have a 1995 Pontiac Firebird V6 3.4L 5 speed manual. On Friday, while driving, the oil pressure dropped to zero. I pulled over right away. There was still oil in the engine, no sign of leak. I replaced the oil pressure sender and started it. The pressure popped right up to normal, 40 psi. 5 minutes later it dropped to zero again then pegged at the max, over 80 psi. No unusual noise or vibration, temperature normal, no sign of leak. The next day, after being off all night, the gauge would jump to 80 as soon as I moved the key to accessory without starting the engine. I thought it was an electrical issue, maybe a loose wire (zero pressure) that occasionally made contact somewhere and shorted out (max pressure). Today, three days later, while driving, the pressure dropped back to zero, then the needle began to jump from zero to max rapidly. As I went to pull over, the engine died and I could not restart it. It is not seized, I think, because it still tries to turn over, just doesn't catch. It is not just the clicking sound I have been told to expect from a seized engine. Other symptom, not sure if it is related or not. Sometimes, when I let off the accelerator the engine while make a knock or pop sound two or three times and die when I press the clutch. I can prevent the engine dieing if I give it some gas before I press the clutch. This happens much more often when I am using the air conditioner, but I was not using the AC today when it died and would not restart. |
