Question: What are the chances of dying in a commercial airlines crash on a given day? Posted: 14 Nov 2014 05:55 PM PST I don't know whether you'll consider this good or bad. The good news is that he probably won't die in an airplane crash. The bad news is that doesn't mean that he won't die in a crash, just that he probably won't be on a plane when it happens. The stats are that he is much more likely to die in a car accident on the way to or from the airport than he is to die in a plane crash. The safest part of a trip is the time on the plane. The roads to and from airports are much more dangerous. Here's some perspective. The worst day in history for commercial aviation was September 11, 2001, when four planes were hijacked and crashed delibrately. The total death toll was roughly the same as the number of deaths in the U.S. from car crashes in the average month. And most of those killed weren't even on airplanes. The number of passengers killed was fewer than die in car crashes each week. |
