electric. The diesel engine runs electric generators that in turn feed electricity to electric motors. Direct-drive diesel is possible, but is uncommon. Hydraulic systems are also used.<p>The engineering problem is how to get the thing rolling from a stop. Steam had the advantage of full torque at zero RPM, something it mostly shares with electric.
