Posted: 13 Aug 2016 02:01 AM PDT In most service that you'll encounter, diesel IS electric. The diesel engine runs electric generators that in turn feed electricity to electric motors. Direct-drive diesel is possible, but is uncommon. Hydraulic systems are also used. The engineering problem is how to get the thing rolling from a stop. Steam had the advantage of full torque at zero RPM, something it mostly shares with electric. Hence, horse-drawn streetcars were replaced with electric almost as soon as practical DC motors were available, because the engineering to coax an internal-combustion engine into traction service didn't exist.
