Posted: 10 Aug 2016 10:18 PM PDT It is hard and the only solution is lots of experience, even as a passenger. At night pedestrians usually only show up as subtle movement of shadows; you know there is something there before you can see them. It seems entirely backward, but pedestrians are easier to see with the headlights off than with them on. The near field of bright light desensitizes your eyes and distracts your vision so you do not search the shadows where pedestrians are. Think about it - while walking at night in a dark place you have no trouble seeing people hundreds of yards away, but when you enter a lighted area you can't see past the light. Of course, you can't drive with the lights off. All you can do is get in the habit of searching the shadows. |
