Question: Electric outboard vs Desiel? Posted: 11 Aug 2016 07:05 AM PDT Thoosa make a line of marine electric motors, e.g. 9kW for a 30ft sailboat. That would need something like 40 240W PV panels running optimally for an hour to recoup the energy for an hour of full-throttle motoring. Putting that many panels on a sailboat is going to create some windage issues, apart from the cost. A solar-powered boat is feasible, but it probably looks like a big motor-catamaran with a huge black deck. Oh - you said outboard. These are inboards; I don t think you re going to get far with an outboard on a 30ft sailboat, except maybe a lightweight trimaran which you could power with a couple of Torqueedos maybe (480W, 68lb thrust) Something like the Thoosa with SLA cells and shore power will get you out of harbour where you aren t allowed to sail. Some more rational number of panels would power all your electronics and let you recharge the motor batteries at sea, but basically you d be sailing. Barbary is something like 40ft with a 20kW ELCO motor. She can run for about 100 miles/14 hours on one charge from shore power. There s about 2A regen from the prop under sail but I don t think that s significant. No significant solar. She s a cruise boat with a fixed route and home marina. |
Question: If the Titanic and Olympic switch actually had happened? Posted: 10 Aug 2016 10:08 PM PDT Disclaimer: Don't answer with anything like "it didn't, so it doesn't matter". Whether it happened or not it's irrelevant to the question. I'm asking what would happen if it had happened, not if it happened. I've always thought this theory was, if nothing else, interesting to think about. I can't say whether I believe it or not, because both sides have their merits. What I'm wondering is, if it were to, in the future, be proven that the two had been switched, and the Olympic, masquerading as the Titanic, had been sank on purpose, in order to collect insurance money, would anything happen to the Cunard Line? I know White Star Line was owner of Titanic, but the two companies have since merged. Would they be penalized for it? I know it's been over 100 years, and I don't know if a Statute of Limitation for mass murder (which is what it would be) exists in the UK, but, since there were American passengers, could the US do anything? Is what would happen now, after the two have merged, any different than what would have happened if they hadn't merged, and White Star Line was still around on its own? I don't expect the people working for or running the company to get punished, but the company, itself. In reality, if it were discovered to be true, would there be any actions taken because of it? |
