Question: Do I continue to pay car insurance while waiting on a a claim? Posted: 16 Aug 2016 08:04 AM PDT Your claim is for a car that was insured at the time of the accident. It doesnt matter if your accident happened at 11:59pm and your insurance lapsed at 12:00. you were insured at the time of the accident, so it will be covered. There are a few things to consider before canceling your policy though. If the car is being totaled and you have a rental, your insurance is covering the insurance on your rental. If the car is being totaled and you are going to buy a new car, you cannot drive the new car off the lot if you dont have insurance. Since you already have full coverage, your current coverage will suffice and your new car will be covered under your old policy (here in CA it's covered for 30 days, but you will pay retroactively to the day you bought the new car). If your car is not being totaled and you have a loan on the car, you cannot (and should not) cancel the insurance. Your car will not be covered while it is at the shop being repaired, and your loan company can take out an insurance policy to cover the car (and only the car) and you will be charged for it. As for your insurance company, be a squeaky wheel. Call every day, every couple hours, until you get a response. If you can get a response from your claims rep, call and get a hold of their boss, or their bosses boss. If you are still getting no answers, go to your state's insurance commission. |
