Question: Subs won t work right. Grounded wrong? Posted: 20 Aug 2016 06:27 PM PDT (A) Randomly moving live wires around is an excellent recipe for permanently blowing your amp and / or speakers, not to mention the possibility of receiving a nasty and potentially fatal shock. . (B) My guess is that you have an impedance-matching problem, but there could be other issues. So, tell us exactly what subs and amp you have (brand and model #), as well as how the subs are wired, what the gauge of your power and ground wires is, and we might be able to tell you what's going on. |
Question: Why do you need an amp for a subwoofer when regular speakers use less than a volt? Posted: 20 Aug 2016 11:23 AM PDT Bass takes considerably more power than other frequencies. In audio parlance, we do not use volts when referring to speaker power. Watts are the units of measurement. As an example, in my big audio syatem (not in a car) I have a triamp setup with (per channel RMS ratings) 1,000 watts for the subwoofer, 150 for bass / midrange and 60 watts for the tweeters. These are all separate, stand alone power amplifiers made by Crest, Hafler and Carver. There are indeed subwoofers which share the amplifier with the full range (regular) speakers. These are rare these days and require either a fairly high efficiency subwoofer and / or a powerful full range amplifier. I had that setup for a couple decades with a single, dual voice coil 10" subwoofer driver bought mail order from McGee Radio in a big, particleboard box which I built in college. I used a passive subwoofer, low - pass crossover to filter out the higher frequencies. |
Question: Speakers popping when trucks running? Posted: 20 Aug 2016 10:11 AM PDT It could be many things, but it is probably a bad engine ground. All cars have a copper grounding strap or cable between the engine and the frame of the car. If yours is broken, missing or corroded in such a way that it interferes with the connection to ground, your speakers will pop and crackle from RF interference caused by the alternator. Because it is higher frequency you generally don't hear it in the subs. The reason it occurs in songs with more bass is because the amplifier draws more power when there are stronger low frequencies. Look for your ground strap, clean the connections for good metal-metal contact, and replace the strap or cable if it is badly corroded. Also, some cars have a second smaller ground wire from the alternator bracket or alternator case to ground on the engine or body of the vehicle, so check for that too. Anonymous · 22 hours ago
