Best hatchbacks I can buy?

I really want a 2 sweater hatchback for my first car. Not a lot rands out to me so far. I want a sporty looking one so no Fiats or Minis. My ideal car would be a Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. It's literally exactly what I want in every way. Sadly it's not sold in America. Any ideas? I would prefer a model with a nice interior and from 2010+. Remember, 2 seats!

Question: Is the 2005 Mini Cooper 2 door convertible a good first car? Is it safe? Is it fun to drive?

Good first car. Yes
Safe. Kind of, they're small but they have the same safety features as most cars.
Fun to drive, Personally I think cars that are stick shift are way more fun to drive than automatics. But mini coopers are pretty light and agile cars and yes I've been in one and they're nice cars.

Question: Is 170,000+ miles a lot?

It all depends on the previous owners and location. Could be a money pit, or good for a few years.

Financing a 13 year old vehicle that gets horrid mileage and comes with a lot of unknowns sounds horrible to me.

Question: 5 kids, baby number 6 on the way :) van/suv options?

It depends what you are looking for. Personally I would buy a Suburban they seat 8-9 and they are decent on mpg my 1999 got 18 hwy, but it's roomy and there is enough room for everyone. And I also rather have a bigger SUV than a van is because with a SUV you get the 4x4 and you can still take it places you can't a van.
