For drainage mostly, bit there are interstates that are in ditches below mean ground level because that is where the original road was.

Question: What is the left lane for?

Posted: 20 Sep 2014 10:42 AM PDT

New Jersey citizens tend to do a good job of keeping right except to pass on most highways. But, if you do happen to pass someone in the middle lane or something, it's not the end of the world. Cops don't really care about that. They're just looking for speeders. I drive in northern Jersey regularly and I see people passing in the middle lane or swerving all the time. The only people that get pulled over are the ones going 85+ mph.

*fun fact: in Germany, keeping right except to pass is strictly enforced. You can pass a cop at 150 mph on the left lane in the unlimited sections of the autobahn, but you'll definitely get pulled over for passing someone on the right!

Question: Driving practice test help?

You are driving on a multi-lane road or highway, and are approaching an emergency vehicle parked along the roadway with its emergency lights activated. If you are in the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, you must:

1. Turn on your headlights so the emergency workers can see your vehicle approaching.
2. Safely leave the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, or slow down to a speed 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.
3. Stay in your lane and obey the speed limit.
