Cars & Transportation: Insurance & Registration: “Question: My Car Was Hit While Parked?” plus 3 more

Question: My Car Was Hit While Parked?

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 07:43 AM PDT

Well, this isn't going to look good.

If you report this to your insurance company, they're going to ask questions. The questions will be stuff like why was your licence suspended, how long does the suspension last, and are you absolutely positively 100% sure you weren't driving. They'll ask that last question several times, and word it differently each time.

If you can convince them that you really truly weren't driving with a suspended licence, they'll cover the damage under your Collision coverage (if you have it), and then they'll cancel your contract. Because they won't believe that you when you say you really aren't ever driving with a suspended licence. Hell, even I don't believe you, and I'm not half as distrustful as an insurance company. Those people don't trust anybody at all, so no way are they going to believe you.

Question: If an unlicensed driver (revoked) has a wreck that IS his fault, will his insurance still pay for it?

Hell no. Insurance doesn't cover loss or damage when the driver "is not authorized by law to operate the vehicle". That's a condition in every auto policy in the civilized world, and insurance companies don't look the other way when it comes to their conditions and restrictions. Ever.

Cops can look the other way, even judges can look the other way, but insurance companies stick to the by-the-book technical rules every time and no exceptions.

If this old fart's licence was revoked 30 years ago, I can guarantee he doesn't have insurance. No insurance company, not even the most gullible company on earth, would insure someone for 30 years and not once check their driving record. Insurance companies don't trust anyone that much.

Question: Taking my moms car?

Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:49 AM PDT

Nope, don't do that. Bad idea, bad with a capital F.

There is only one word that is used to describe driving someone's car without their permission, and that word is theft.

Cops don't call it joyriding, they call it stealing. The fact that your mom is the owner doesn't mean squat. It's not yours, you took it without permission, therefore you stole it.

Think for a minute: Right to remain silent, how much does a defence lawyer cost, don't drop the soap, never allowed to drive Mom's car even when you do get your licence, it's all bad for a long long time.

Lemmy tell you something about gambling. When you gamble, you can win or you can lose. Only gamble when what you might win is greater than what you'll probably lose. In your case, the very best you can hope for is a tie. You've got nothing to win and a whole lot to lose, and smart gamblers don't go near a gamble like that.

Question: Would you rather take a plane or drive a car to another state?

That depends on which state, because I've been to a few.

I'm in Ontario, so driving to Florida or California is just too much time on the road. But if I'm going to Ohio or Tennessee, that's totally doable by car.
