2007 chev colorado. won't start intermittently. won't even turn over. just hear a small single click.?

No rhyme or reason to when it will or won't start. Chevy place says that the battery cable from the batt to the starter to the alternator (the whole thing) is bad and must be replaced. He thinks this could be the fix. $450.00 I have heard that cable should never go bad. Thoughts?

I have a 2003 jetta with 90,000 miles on it and it feels as though something is wrong but I don't know what. I don't know much about cars as is, but it doesn't seem to be running as smoothly as I would have thought. The gears changes seen to be real dragged out almost like it's working to hard to change.i had my check engine light on about 2 months ago but that was just a catalytic converter issue. What I want to know is what part of the car is responsible for the gear shifts and if I should invest in switch that part out or not. help please

P.s: I had a couple of times where I was on the freeway and the rim went up to about 40 and I had a cloud of white smoke come out of my back pipe but that's not too common. I just figure to put that out there just in case it matters
