Question: Boat Owners of YA: what's owning a boat like?

Posted: 10 Sep 2014 10:41 PM PDT

Basically you buy a hole in the water made from steel , plastic or wood , and ever-after you throw money down the hole . Living aboard is basically cramped , grubby , and bloody cold except in summer , when it is unpleasantly hot and sweaty . Everything gets mould due to condensation , and stinks from lack of dry air ventilation and from cooking smells .

Oh the Freedom and the Romance .

Question: What does "Caution Area" mean on a Nautical Chart?

Posted: 10 Sep 2014 11:08 AM PDT

On paper charts, there's an information box. On electronic charts, it's not so obvious and it may not be there at all. I think, though I'm not entirely sure, that on my Garmin system the caution text appears as a mouseover. Or a truncated version of it.
It might be anything - military exercise area, tide rips in some wind conditions, underwrater turbines, magnetic anomaly - something too complicated to explain in two words or a common icon.

Question: How does FFT differs from DFT AND FT?

Posted: 10 Sep 2014 07:26 AM PDT

FFT is a computer implementation of a DFT. FT I guess is the general mathematical transform (an continuous analog process, as it were, as opposed to a discrete one)

Question: One ton diesel how many litters?

Posted: 10 Sep 2014 05:26 AM PDT

depend on the specific gravity factor. Marine Diesel oil has a gravity of about .885 so,
a cubic meter = 1000 liters
1 cube = .885 tones
1000 liters = .885 tones
1000/.885= 1129.94
so approximately 1130 liters = 1 ton

Question: Pontoon vs run about boat?

Posted: 09 Sep 2014 09:26 PM PDT

I would think a deck boat (http://www.discoverboating.com/resources... would be a good choice - depending on the capacity you intend to carry (capacity plate on any boat needs to be heeded). Pontoon boats have all the appeal and performance of a mini-van as they have one purpose in life - hauling meat. .

Question: What is a soft spot on the floor of a boat?

Posted: 09 Sep 2014 06:38 PM PDT

Plywood boat floors typically get condensation on the undersides , go soggy , rot and de-laminate , and even slathering creosote and tar over brand new replacement sheets only seems to inhibit the rot-monster for a while . The problem is basically one of lack of air circulation in the deep dark recesses of your bilges . The best solution is to fit some sort of permanent forced draught blower , plus air inlet vents , plus a " chimney pipe " for when the boat is not in use .
But expect insect wildlife to promptly move into the nice airy environment you thereby create .
