Question: Why are trains more popular in Britain and Europe than they are in the US and Canada?

Posted: 30 Sep 2014 08:02 PM PDT

Again, and agreeing with the other answers, North America has one of the lowest population densities in terms of people per square mile. Some states are larger than many European countries, but have less population than a moderately-sized European city. Away from the eastern seaboard the majority of the population live in the cities, which are much further apart than Europe, in particular. Even factoring in the time and cost of travel between the city centres and airports, travelling by air is naturally faster, cheaper, and quicker overall.
The other side of the coin is that the North American railroads are indispensable for freight transport. There is no other way that the huge volume of traffic that moves across the North American continent could be moved otherwise.
